TO EAT IN THE UNITED STATES

Do your kids sometimes wish they had been born in the USA? You’re in luck! Flights booked, hotels reserved, and suitcases packed – all that’s left is finding somewhere to eat. Le Guide Fooding has got you covered with a high-flying list of 10 family-friendly spots across New York and L.A.!

East Coast New York...?

  • BERNIE’S

C’mon, no list would be complete without a burger! And not just any burger… At Bernie's, they serve a juicy grilled patty in a squidgy soft bun, with runny cheese, some crunchy lettuce, plus crispy, yet fluffy fries on the side. Burgers don’t float yours or your kids’ boat? Don’t worry, the breaded veal escalope should put a smile on your face. After which, you can’t not order Bernie's brownie sundae, topped with a mountain of whipped cream. And why not prolong the pleasure by picking up a cool souvenir t-shirt too?

332 DRIGGS AVE, BROOKLYN, NY 11222

  • BAD HABIT

Decisions, decisions… Over in the East Village, Bad Habit ice cream parlor will leave your kids spoilt for choice, with more than a hundred artisanal ice cream and sorbet flavors on offer, served in a cone or a pot. Heads up – picking is no mean feat: stracciatella, flan, miso caramel, roasted banana, strawberry hibiscus, white peach and shiso... Not to mention the medley of toppings (cookie crumble, puffed rice, honey), or the ice cream sandwich options! In short, you’ve got your work cut out! Take away and enjoy at Tompkins Square Park, just opposite!

    32-03 BROADWAY, QUEENS, NY 11106

  • WIN SON BAKERY

As an alternative to the classics, mix things up Taiwanese-style at Win Son Bakery, which fires out an array of sweet and savory treats, to nibble on the small terrace out front or to take away without delay. Our top tips for younger appetites? The chocolate bao, the mochi donut (seeing is believing!), the famous scallion pancakes with eggs, bacon, and cheese, as well as the egg sando. You can even purchase some merch, like t-shirts and children's recipe books!

164 GRAHAM AVE, BROOKLYN, NY 11206

  • L’INDUSTRIE

This eatery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is arguably home to the best slices in the whole of town. Their secret? A sauce made from Bianco Di Napoli tomatoes, dough fermented cold for three days, and – most importantly – lots of amore! If the kids aren’t sure, set their sights on the classic with a tomato sauce base, mozzarella, burrata, and basil – Big Apple-style! And if they’re good, they might be allowed an Italian gelato for dessert…

104 CHRISTOPHER ST, NEW YORK, NY 10014

  • RUSS & DAUGHTERS

Fancy a bagel? It’s high time that you got yourself over to Russ & Daughters, a Jewish institution founded in 1941 that’s been passed down through four generations of restaurateurs, and which continues to delight locals and tourists alike to this day. Feed the whole family with the iconic round bread – also available in a traditional Ashkenazi bialy – stuffed with salmon gravlax, cream cheese, capers, and onions. As well as crispy, golden brown latkes (shredded potato pancakes) served with a dollop of sour cream.

...Or West Coast Los Angeles?

  • JON & VINNY’S

Even in L.A., the truth comes out of the youngest mouths: there is very little that tops pasta and pizza. And because nothing is too good for your little ones, here’s the 411: head to one of several Jon & Vinny's locations, let them color in their funky placemats, before devouring some of the most kid-friendly dishes around, all together as a family: spaghetti with parmesan or tomato sauce, cheesy pizza, before confetti cookies or Italian-style soft serve... and don't forget to leave without bagging the restaurant's T-shirt!

412 N FAIRFAX AVE, LOS ANGELES, CA 90036

  • COURAGE BAGELS

And you'll certainly need some courage to face the long line of hungry people... unless your completely jet-lagged kids wake you up at the break of dawn! If that’s the case, grab one of the butter yellow stools outside this joint and devour the best Californian bagel you’ve ever had in your life: hand-sliced smoked salmon, fromage frais, tomatoes, onions, capers, dill, pepper, olive oil, and lemon... A snack that certainly fills the hole in your belly!

777 N Virgil Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029

  • CLARK STREET DINER

Have you always dreamed of slurping up a milkshake in an authentic American diner? You and the kids will get more than you bargained for… This Hollywood joint with retro decor wins over little guests with big helpings of granola and yogurt, scrambled eggs, mini-pancakes, quesadillas, and cheeseburgers – not forgetting the iconic milkshakes! The cherry on the sundae? The swivel chairs at the counter and top-notch bingo evenings too. Welcome to the American dream!

6145 FRANKLIN AVE, LOS ANGELES, CA 90068

  • LANGER'S DELICATESSEN

Looking to get your teeth into the best pastrami in town? It could well be at Langer's Delicatessen, an institution established in 1947 that sure needs no introduction. Here you can introduce the little ones to the crème de la crème of cold cuts. Our fave? The number 19 - a rye bread sandwich filled with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian-style dressing. And if their dalliance with pastrami isn’t love at first sight, fear not: the kids’ menu includes hot dogs and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Delish!

704 S ALVARADO ST, LOS ANGELES, CA 90057

  • FOUND OYSTER

Don't be afraid, we’re not about to make your little ones try their very first oysters, rather, the idea here is to get a taste of the sea! And this raw bar will delight palates all across the adventurous scale: seafood platters, crudo, and sauces with a twist, as well as fried cod sandwiches, lobster rolls, and large plates of fries, served on red and white checkered serviettes. As for the drinks? Lemonade for the little ones, low-intervention wines for the adults, and homemade ice cream that everyone can agree on. A bigger splash!
