On the occasion of the release of the CINEMA collection, we met Ruben Alves, in the post-production studios of his first series. We meet him as delivery approaches - and time is running out. Action.
He is an actor, writer, director and producer, but it is never with these terms that he defines himself. "When people ask me what I do for a living, I instinctively say I tell stories."
In his parents' apartment, Ruben writes, films, plays and organizes previews. Cinema? It's not (yet) an obvious choice. What interests him is the plot, the characters, the stories of life, especially those that are invisible.
Ruben started in front of the camera as an extra and then as an actor, before moving to the other side and staying there for good. His favorite part of directing short and feature films is orchestrating the entire creative process: from writing to making.
His cinema? That of others.
"My cinema is social. I like to talk about often difficult subjects, but in a light-hearted way, and highlight those who are terribly lacking in society."
The desire to transmit an emotion first, to create shots and sequences second. Through Ruben's camera, we contemplate raw, pure and profoundly real stories - no matter what society thinks. Thus, if some of his characters lived happily and had many children, others write their own path.
When it comes to style, Ruben defines himself as an eternal "casual chic". "My days often last more than 24 hours. I run around. When shooting or in post-production, I need to be comfortable in my clothes. And I love fashion! So always with good taste in details and colors." A look that he finds today at October.
A casual wardrobe that dialogues with materials, details and colors. Jeans and sneakers accessorized with a pair of colored socks, velvet pants that sign an apparently simple outfit. An accessory (falsely) sought after, but resolutely reverent, "besides, usually, I rarely wear caps, but the October one, I wear it every day. I'm crazy about it."
"October has a very New York vibe, and combines the aesthetics of European staging and direction with color and image play. Once you dive in, it's hard to get out."
